Despite his failure as an actor - the miserable minor parts, the mockery and the cancellations - Senechal's self-confidence is unshakeable. One night, wandering through a provincial street in the costume of a Foreign Legionnaire, he discovers an opportunity to prove his worth - by playing his roles in real life. The world of the stage may look down on him, but the "theater of life" gives him a standing ovation. Senechal unintentionally becomes a slick impersonator, a debonair fraud, loved by high society and the general public alike.
