A priceless 15th century Flemish painting depicts a game of chess not yet completed. A duke and a knight are frozen in time as they move pieces across the board, while the mysterious duchess sits at a window lost in tought.
All is not as it seems, however, when Julia, an energetic and attractive young art restorer finds a Latin inscription hidden under layers of paint which asks the enigmatic question, "Who killed the knight ?".
Trying to discover the meaning of this phrase, Julia enters a shadowy world where the value of life is less than the price of a painting and the art of murder is more skiful and dangerous than the sweep of a brush.
