Hari and his sister Lila are the eldest children of an Indian family. Their mother is ill and their father spends most of his time in a drunken stupor. Despite the family's poverty they work together with a passionate aim : to secure a place for their family and their village in a future shot through with change. There is no work in the village, and as Hari is old enough to earn, he runs away to Bombay leaving Lila to cope single handed.
