Naples, 15th century. The cunning and rich sharper Volpone feigns a fatal illness so that the bourgeois of the city will court his favour in the hope of being named his heir. with his wily servant, Mosca, playing on their hopes and fears, the legacy-hunters begin to turn up at Volpone's sickbed with increasingly sumptuous gifts: there is Grappione the notary, Bertuccio the draper and Secco the moneylender, who outdo one another in greed and flattery. The stage is set for the cruel farce.
